Building the Book-Based Ecosystem

Having published more than 50 books, here is what I know about a book that thuds after launch: a thud is a symptom. The diagnosis is almost always a missing ecosystem.

So what is a Book-Based Ecosystem anyway?

Before Credible Ink was Credible Ink, I did only book production, and I watched good books fail because they arrived in empty rooms. The purpose of a Book-Based Ecosystem is to develop the presence, audience, and signal around your book, with everything pointing to and from it. It becomes a synergistic amplifier of your messaging, leading to more conversations and opportunities.

Why and how we build it.

Most people treat a published book as the finish line, but it’s far more useful to think of it as the generative anchor for your Book-Based Ecosystem. Knowing what and where to anchor it to is essential.

Together, we evaluate and build your positioning, your public presence, and a consistent publishing practice to start gathering an audience around your ideas. At the same time, using this research and development to inform and guide us, we are designing and producing your book. By launch day, your book’s arrival is an event your audience has become invested in because they watched it unfold.

Underneath all of it, what gets built is you — visible, in your own voice, taking public ownership of your ideas. A lot of what we call authority is actually someone’s capacity to be fully seen. It’s nervous system work. How you choose to be seen is up to you — writing, video, a podcast — but being seen is the core requirement of building a successful Book-Based Ecosystem.

Why build it with me.

Through years in the entrepreneurial crucible, ICF-certified coach training, university teaching, and a long career in branding, design, and marketing, I have both deeply explored and personally struggled with visibility. Messaging mechanics are not the same as the energy and courage it takes to show up as yourself and stand behind your ideas. I know what it takes, both on the outside and on the inside.

The unexpected benefits.

If your book exists to serve your business, then building your book’s ecosystem is functionally building your business as well. The positioning, presence, audience, and website that finally cohere in service of the book also serve your business long term.

How it Works

In addition to as-needed communications or meetings about the production of your book, we meet twice a month to focus on building your ecosystem.

Between sessions, I research and write to bring you informed options for developing your online ecosystem. That could take the form of rewriting headlines or restructuring a website. We may focus on cadence, or we may focus on content. Not every author needs every part. Some arrive with a website and a newsletter already running and need the messaging pulled in line. Others need the positioning built from the ground up. We start from what you have and build what's missing.

This is what you can expect:

  • Month one. Excavating your current public presence and understanding what's already built and why. Cover development begins.

  • Months two and three. Refining your online persona and messaging through consistent presence. The interior layout and proofing of your book is happening in the background.

  • Month four. A launch plan, publication, and post-launch plans for an interested audience you’ve been slowly building in the background.

What it asks of you

A regular practice of publishing and engaging under your own name, at a rhythm we set together.

The willingness to have your words read in public without you there to provide context. If putting out small pieces is uncomfortable, promoting a whole book will be more so.

You don't need to arrive with that tolerance. You need the willingness to build it.

What launch means here

Your launch plan is shaped with you from what we learned over the previous months, and delivered in your own voice, with me in your corner through launch week. Not included: PR, event planning, or paid advertising. If you want them, I'll connect you with the right people.

Where to start

Every engagement begins with the Strategic Publishing Diagnostic. Its $750 is credited in full toward publishing with Credible Ink if we begin within three months.
